Newspaper plays an important part in our day-to-day life. Yet the life of an individual paper is fleeting. The primary use of a newspaper; providing news is over in a day. Yasmin Sethi explored ways in which newspapers could be reused and their life extended. This project, inspired by the versatility of newspapers extends their role in our daily life.
Yasmin’s Newspaper Furniture designed by her in 2005 is based on the principle that cylinders of hand rolled newspaper have a much greater vertical strength then individual sheets of paper. Yasmin attached these rolls together to create furniture that can easily take the weight of an adult
Items in this range are the ‘Maya’ a Stool made out of concentric circles of newspaper rolls.
‘Uma,’ the Chair, also made out of concentric rolls.
The ‘Tu-tu’, love seat, designed for intimacy.
Accompanied by the’ Padma’ Table inspired by the shape of a flower. Padma, lotus in Hindi, is made of folded petal shapes and newspaper rolls. The combination of these two folds distributes the weight evenly across the structure providing great stability. The overhead view of this table looks like a flower. A clear glass is placed to form the tabletop.
